Welcome to the Hamburg Inn! Fifties Time Capsule of Good Eating
The Hamburg Inn has been serving delicious burgers and unsurpassed homefries since 1948, when it was founded by the Panther family. A tour of Iowa City is incomplete witout a meal at the Hamburg Inn. We serve delicious, simple food at the most inexpensive price in town. We also feature daily specials and homemade soups.

We are popular with the college crowd, with regulars who have been faithful for 40 years, and we are a hit with newcomers upon their first experiences with Burg omelettes. Be hungry when you stop in--the portions are substantial and hearty. Try the homefries and a burger for lunch, or an omelette for breakfast. Popular omelettes include the "Iowa"--two eggs, ham, cheese, and hashbrowns; and the "Zadar"--two eggs, hamburger, cheese, and homefries. The latter is named after amovie that was filmed at the Hamburg Inn, "Zadar, Cow from Hell".

If you prefer hot cakes, we are your place, as well as for french toast, and our popular recipe for biscuits in sausage gravy. Daily specials are popular, too. On Mondays we offer a hot roast beef sandwich (affectionately dubbed "the beast" by the kitchen staff) with mashed potatoes and hot gravy poured over the whole thing. (The beast is the author's favorite special, by the way...). On Thursdays and Sundays we offer our famous Hamburg Inn fried chicken--two pieces with a vegetable, mashed potatoes and gravy and a dinner roll. Both of these specials are reasonably priced at $3.25.

We also serve shakes and malts, lovingly prepared for you by the incredibly efficient and even more incredibly modest serving staff. We offer Pepsi products as well as fresh-ground, fresh-brewed coffee.

Is your mouth watering yet? Stop by...our hours are from 6 am to 11 pm Monday through Sunday everyday. A suggestion borne of experience: if you show up on Sunday morning, be prepared to wait. Ask for a cup of coffee while you are waiting--it will be well worth your time.
